What does AVID Elementary mean?

AVID Elementary is designed to prepare students to become College and/or Career Ready, which aligns with Common Core State Standards.  As an AVID Elementary, Hyatt teachers implement rigorous curriculum and supports that are driven to empower our students to be successful in their academic journey.  Our students will attain success through the use of AVID supports that are integrated throughout daily instruction in every classroom, across each grade level, which build school culture and drive our students to reach their highest potential, as well as, prepare them for their transition into Upper grades - Secondary AVID.   AVID Elementary focuses on four areas to build academic success in every student: Instruction, Culture, Leadership and Systems.

 

Components

AVID Elementary incorporates:

 

  • Student Success Skills – We realize that part of becoming successful is learning the skills necessary to be successful; therefore, we use strategies that focus on communication skills (i.e., listening, speaking, and writing), note-taking skills, critical thinking skills and study skills in every content area. 
  • Organizational Skills – Organization is key, both mentally and physically, so we empower our students to become organized through the use of Nicky Folders, Phoenix Binders, Planners and D.L.I.Q. (reflection).  In addition, students will learn how to better manage their time and set goals to assist in them becoming academically successful.
  • WICOR Lessons – Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading to learn in all content areas are strategies that are built into our daily instruction to promote academic success, as well as, align with Common Core State Standards.
  • Partnerships – Partnerships are a valuable tool in promoting success, so Hyatt teachers work hard at integrating several different opportunities for collaboration among students, classrooms, grade levels, schools, families, and communities.
